Good Morning Fam!

As many of you know, health and wellness are extremely important to me. I try to support the wellness journeys of my friends, family, and associates because I believe that sickness and disease have robbed so many people of their destinies. Furthermore, the bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

A few years ago, I was diagnosed as being in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes. I panicked. I had no plans of living the remainder of my life bound by diabetes. I have a contribution to make in this world and it will be much more difficult to make if I am distracted by poor health. Knowing that my paternal grandmother lost her sight and a limb to diabetes made me all the more determined to shake that diagnosis. So, I had a long talk with my family physician. I agreed to take oral medication and regularly monitor my blood sugar levels, but I also assured him that I would make some lifestyle changes that would reverse the condition. “Give me 6 months!”fcsip15_avocado-grapefruit-salad_xlg

I immediately made changes to my eating habits:

  • I eliminated bread, cake/cookies/pie, and fast food (except Subway).
  • I swapped brown rice for white rice.
  • I cut out all fried foods and opted for baked, broiled, or steamed items.
  • I drank water, coffee or tea instead of fruit juice or flavored, sweetened teas.

IMG_0291Then I started walking on the treadmill for 45 minutes 3-4 days per week. After a month, I added one Zumba class each week. I loved the music and the instructor made it feel like fun, not like work. (Shout out Ebony Terry). In 9 months, I lost 30 pounds and was taken off of the oral medication. I went on to slowly lose 70 pounds. I’ve regained quite a bit, but I’ve managed to maintain my blood glucose levels and stave off diabetes. (I get checked every 6 months.)

I’m not saying that there is a magic formula to weight loss or that my way is the only way. People who peddle weight loss products and services would have you to believe that you NEED their products to achieve your wellness goals. I’m not knocking anybody’s hustle, but I am a living witness that you can transform your health through healthy eating, regular exercise, and partnering with your health care professionals.

I’m a work in progress, but I’m committed to this journey!
